The State of Minnesota requires the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State (ACCESS) test to be administered annually to to Kindergarten through 12th-grade students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs) to monitor students’ progress in learning academic English.

The assessments measure students’ academic English language in four language domains:

• Listening

• Speaking

• Reading

• Writing

Test times vary by tier; approximate administration times are:

• Listening: up to 40 minutes

• Speaking: up to 30 minutes

• Reading: up to 35 minutes

• Writing: up to 65 minutes

Results are shared with parents at fall conferences.
